The Office of the President said on the 2nd that it “deeply regrets” the impeachment bill against Lee Jin-sook, the chairwoman of the Korea Communications Commission, which led to her suspension from duty at the National Assembly plenary session, and added, “We would like to ask what the difference is between North Korea sending sewage balloons and the opposition party impeaching her with sewage.” Regarding the chairwoman’s future, it said, “In order to stand up to the opposition party’s impeachment rampage, the chairwoman will proudly face the Constitutional Court’s judgment.”

Spokesperson for the Blue House Jeong Hye-jeon said in a briefing on the afternoon of the 2nd, “The Blue House deeply regrets the opposition party’s unilateral push for the impeachment of Chairman Lee.” She continued, “We would like to ask how the Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission could have committed such a serious violation of the Constitution or the law during just one day of work,” and “He did nothing but lawfully appoint a successor to the board of directors of a public broadcasting company whose term is ending. This kind of reckless impeachment is truly an unconstitutional and unlawful act.”

Spokesperson Jeong said, “The three chairmen of the Korea Communications Commission worked for 73 days (former Korea Communications Commission Chairperson Lee Dong-kwan), 181 days (former Korea Communications Commission Chairperson Kim Hong-il), and 1 day (Chairman Lee) before the opposition party proposed impeachment.” He added, “This is the seventh impeachment bill proposed by the Democratic Party in the past two months since the 22nd National Assembly began. They are proposing an impeachment bill at a rate of one every nine days.” He then asked, “Who is this impeachment for?” and “It’s not just impeachment. In the past two months, the opposition party has proposed nine special prosecution cases. While they have been abusing impeachments and special prosecutions for political strife, there has not been a single bill that the ruling and opposition parties have agreed on and processed regarding livelihood issues.”

Earlier, the Korea Communications Commission completed the procedure for appointing public broadcasting directors on the 31st of last month, the same day as the appointment of Chairman Lee and Standing Committee Member Kim Tae-gyu. They appointed public broadcasting executives as soon as they restored the ‘two-person system’, which is the minimum quorum for resolutions.

The opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, held a plenary session of the National Assembly on the 2nd and pushed through the impeachment motion against Chairman Lee. The impeachment motion cited the fact that Chairman Lee had decided on the appointment of directors of the public broadcasting company and the Broadcast Culture Promotion Association through a two-member standing committee as grounds for impeachment.

Unlike his predecessors, this chairman did not voluntarily resign before the National Assembly vote on the impeachment bill. In a statement on the 2nd, Chairman Lee said, “I hope that the unprecedented impeachment of the chairman of the Korea Communications Commission will minimize the gap in broadcasting and communications policy,” and “I will faithfully participate in the Constitutional Court’s impeachment trial and do my best so that the Korea Communications Commission can return to normal as soon as possible.”
