It is unacceptable that the former EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, appointed EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan Toivo Klaar, considers the issue of the return of Armenians who migrated voluntarily from the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan to Armenia and other countries where they previously lived as a special case, setting conditions on the right of return of Azerbaijanis forcibly expelled from Armenia. Armenia is obliged to create appropriate conditions for the safe and dignified return of Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia to their native lands, and the international community must demand the fulfillment of this obligation.

As reported by Day.Az on Monday, Deputy Press Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Vasif Aliyev said this while answering a media question about the claims of the former Special Representative of the European Union for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar regarding Azerbaijan.

“Ambassador-designate Toivo Klaar is well aware that Armenians do not intend to return to the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan, despite repeated requests from the Azerbaijani side for Armenian residents to remain in their homes and for them to return. In particular, the Azerbaijani side respects the intention to return to Azerbaijan only of persons of Armenian origin who respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country.

Klaar’s biased statements on the eve of his departure from office are, first of all, another blow to the reputation of the institution that the official face of the European Union represents,” he said.
