The most anticipated KTM of the year is here, the new 890 SMT, direct heir to the mythical and renowned 990 Supermoto, whose production ceased in 2013; The illustrious surname SMT returns to the catalog of the Austrian firm a decade later, and it does so through a motorcycle that derives from the 890 Adventure with a much sportier and more radical style, focused 100% on asphalt.

Starting with the engine, we find the already popular parallel twin LC8c with 889 cc and a final power of 105 hp at 8,000 rpm., maintaining the figures of the Adventure R model. The engine stands out for a 20% increase in rotating masses compared to the previous 790 cc engine, which provides more stability and safety in the curves, while the anti-knock control and the bodies Dual 46mm Dell’Orto throttles ensure a more energetic power delivery.

The tank itself -with a capacity of 15.8 litres- plays a decisive role in the ergonomics of the 890 SMT, and has been stylized and designed specifically for this model. The shape of the tank moves the rider even further inside the bike, with a wide and comfortable contact patch, yet compact enough to allow you to move freely and fluidly, aided by the 860mm high Supermoto-style one-piece seat.

The KTM 890 SMT features a chrome-molybdenum steel chassis with a more closed geometry, although with a design similar to that of the Adventure family. The rear shock is raked further to lower seat height and accommodate the longer swingarm, which contributes to a forward-leaned riding position as well as straight-line stability. The handlebar offers six different positions in a 30mm range for the perfect fit.

WP APEX suspensions feature a 43mm open-cartridge upside-down fork with 180mm of travel, like the rear shock. Both front and rear we find all kinds of adjustment. The wheel configuration is typical for road, with a size of 17″ and Michelin PowerGP tires as standard.

Stopping the 890 SMT is easy thanks to its powerful brakes, with four-piston calipers biting 320mm front discs and a dual-piston caliper and 260mm disc at the rear. To put all this braking power into action, Cornering ABS and Supermoto ABS are available.

State-of-the-art 5″ TFT instrumentation is made from optically bonded mineral glassis scratch and glare resistant and fully customizable, while featuring an easy-to-use infographic menu system with customizable settings to suit pilot preferences.

Electronically, the 890 SMT has three standard riding modes (RAIN, STREET, SPORT) which can be expanded with an optional TRACK setting that allows the rider to toggle between different throttle modes and Traction control through 10 levels.

As an option, the future owner of an 890 SMT can mount heated grips and the possibility of adding the regulation of the engine brake to the software pack (MSR, ideal for improving control in low-grip situations and for quickly downshifting.) QUICKSHIFTER+ and Cruise Control are also optional and ready to go with a simple activation process.

Good connectivity with the motorcycle also means full access to the navigation possibilities, and among the advantages of the App KTMconnect Roadside assistance, instruction manuals and a digital maintenance book are included for reviews and maintenance.

KTM has already accepted orders for its 890 SMT in its dealer network; there is only one color finish available that mixes black, orange and white, at a confirmed price in Spain of 14,275 euros.
