English club Manchester United announced on Thursday that Dutch coach Erik ten Hag has signed a new contract with the team, after months of controversy over his fate with the Red Devils.

The club wrote in a statement on its official website that Ten Hag had extended his contract with the club until June 2026.

“I am very happy to have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together,” the Dutch coach told the website after the signing. “We have to be clear that there is still a lot of hard work to do to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means competing for English and European titles.”

Ten Hag’s second season with the Red Devils ended well, after he led them to victory in the cup final against arch-rivals Manchester City, the league champion, with two goals to one.

But the build-up to the Wembley game has been dominated by talk about Ten Hag’s future, with a report suggesting he will be sacked by United’s new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe regardless of the result.

United finished eighth in the league, their lowest position since 1990, and were also eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage.

The Dutch coach won the League Cup last season.

After a modest season… Will Ten Hag continue with the “Red Devils”?

Dutch coach Erik ten Hag’s chances of keeping his job with Manchester United have risen after a post-season review by the club’s management, local media reported.

Ten Hag ended a six-year trophy drought in his first season with United by winning the League Cup in 2023 and finishing third in the league, before results declined last season, with United suffering 14 defeats and falling 31 points behind champions City.

Ten Hag became United’s fifth permanent manager since the end of the era of legendary coach “Sir” Alex Ferguson in 2013, after the latter’s compatriot David Moyes, Dutchman Louis van Gaal, Portuguese Jose Mourinho and Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
