The Citizen Council for Cohesion and Emergence in Guinea (CONCICOE) officially launched its first activities yesterday, Saturday, August 17, 2024, in the urban commune of Kindia, located 135 kilometers from the capital Conakry. This cross-cutting platform, created by Guinean citizens with the aim of responding to certain environmental, climatic, food, educational, socio-economic, socio-political and socio-cultural issues, has, on this occasion, proceeded to the reforestation of nearly 500 plants in the classified forest of Koukou.

It was in the conference room of the governorate of Kindia that the first activities of the Citizen Council for Cohesion and Emergence (CONCICOE) were officially launched, in the presence of regional authorities and those in charge of the Environment and Sustainable Development in Guinea. Asked about the scope of this platform, the Honorable Djouldé Sow, President of the Citizen Council for Cohesion and Emergence in Guinea (CONCICOE) explained: “This initiative comes from the very foundations of CONCICOE. It was created to meet climate challenges because for us it is an essential challenge today. Climate change has turned our world upside down and if today we do not each do our part to restore the vegetation cover, we are heading straight for the wall and this is explained by the lack of water today, the large rivers that were in all our prefectures have all dried up. People are drilling, there are no others. This concerns everyone. That is why we started as a second activity, reforestation in Kindia. This action will continue because it is not our first experience, we have already done 500 plants in Kindia, 1000 plants in Koundara, in Lélouma, we did in Gaoual, in Dalaba, in Mamou and even in Dubreka. So it is a logical continuation because for us preserving nature is essential so that we can leave to our children and grandchildren what our parents left us, otherwise tomorrow history will condemn us all, “he explained.

After the launching ceremony where the objective and commitment of the Citizen Council for Cohesion and Emergence (CONCICOE) were appreciated by the authorities of Kindia, a reforestation activity was carried out in the classified forest of Koukou, which is now in danger of disappearing. A gesture much appreciated by the Regional Inspector of the Environment and Sustainable Development of Kindia, Commander Aboubacar 1 Diallo. “This forest was classified in 1942. Originally, it was 43.4 ha but to date we no longer have the original surface area since there have been harmful effects of human actions. So this forest is slowly disappearing, if measures are not taken. Originally, there were more than 20 spring heads at the origin of this classified forest, it was the main source of drinking water supply in the city of Kindia. Today when you look, there are only 2 or 3 spring heads left. So, we are trying by all means to save what remains of this forest. So this action of the council is a real satisfaction to know that there are civil society organizations that are interested in the restoration of our environment, in the implementation of concrete actions to protect and restore fragile ecosystems such as the classified forest of Koukou. So this action of Concicoe goes straight to our hearts insofar as it will allow these ecosystems to maintain their biological diversity, their vitality, their regeneration capacities and especially their capacity to satisfy currently and for the future the economic, ecological and social functions. “, he says.

The launch ceremony featured an artistic performance focused on awareness sessions to combat climate change and other factors that contribute to safeguarding the environment.
