A week before meeting Maccabi Netanya in the Conference League qualifiers, Istanbul in Shakespeare made a particularly impressive acquisition. The Turkish team has added Mesut Ozil, who was recently released from Fenerbahce.
The former German national team midfielder is the latest acquisition of Bashkashir, whose roster includes glittering names such as Argentine Lucas Biglia and Belgian Nasser Chadley.
Ozil, 33, has been considered one of the best offensive midfielders in the world for the past decade, and was one of the stars of the German team that won the World Cup in 2014, alongside successful years at Real Madrid and Arsenal.
Over the years there has been a decline in Ozil’s ability, and his political involvement and ties with Recep Tayyip Erdogan have not contributed to his status either. Now, he joins the group most identified with the Turkish president, having been released during the week from Fenerbahce.
Next Thursday, Maccabi Netanya will host Istanbul against Bashkashir, and a week later Bnei Lem’s team will host the opponent that the same coach said in Luzulu, and it is still unclear whether Ozil will take part in both games.
