The students at the University of Salzburg criticize the interference of politics in the rector’s case. As reported, the state governor is threatening to stop payments.

Salzburg’s Governor Wilfried Haslauer announced that he would stop grants to the university. The reason is the still unclear successor to the rector. According to Haslauer, those responsible are not in a position to create a legally compliant rectorate. Criticism is now coming from the students: “State Governor Haslauer should row back and make it clear that financing from the state will continue to be guaranteed in the future, regardless of the rector issue at our university,” says Cedric Keller. The chairman of the Austrian Students’ Union at the University of Salzburg (ÖH) strongly criticizes the politician’s statement. Haslauer should stay out of the university’s affairs. Because only the Senate should make a decision. “Political influence or exerting pressure from outside is therefore completely out of place,” emphasizes Keller. Haslauer wonders whether money is being well spent. But for Haslauer it is not about interference, but about limiting the damage. “You have to ask yourself whether we really want to finance an institution that we are not actually responsible for. And the question arises as to whether the money is well spent,” says Haslauer. The state has invested 29 million euros in the university since 2016. Exclusive contributions and funding. The vice-rectors Martin Weichbold and Nicola Hüsing are currently running the university. Hendrik Lehnert resigned from his position on September 30th. It is still unclear when a successor will be appointed. In addition to him, Viola Heutger and Martin Hitz are also in the race. The University Senate wants to discuss the future of the university at its next meeting on October 17th. It would not only be possible that the election would drag on further. If no agreement is reached, the rector’s case could also end up before the Federal Administrative Court.
