Regarding the passage of the “National 250,000 Won Support Act” led by the Democratic Party of Korea at the National Assembly plenary session on the 2nd, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said, “If we are going to give 250,000 won to every citizen, let’s start by supporting small business owners who suffered damage from Timep (Tmon, WeMakePrice).”

Mayor Oh criticized the situation in a Facebook post that day, saying, “The essence of this situation is ‘anti-weakness, anti-welfare,’” and “The Democratic Party, which claims to protect the weak, is strangely adding the modifier ‘universal’ to its words and saying it will scatter 13 trillion won in cash without asking questions. The logic is that the welfare budget, which was created to support the needy, will be used to fill the wallets of the wealthy.”

He said, “If you stimulate prices by loosening the money supply, the damage will be completely borne by the weak,” and “The money that is being thrown around to help the common people will ruin their lives. Is the ‘food-based economy’ that Representative Lee Jae-myung talks about an ideology for the strong and the rich?”

He continued, “The effectiveness of welfare policies depends on how and to whom limited resources are used,” and suggested to Representative Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party, “Let’s withdraw the bill to hand out 250,000 won in cash now and start taking care of the lives of the vulnerable who are suffering right now. If we are going to hand out 250,000 won to every citizen, let’s find ways to actually help small business owners who have been affected by the ‘TeamP incident.’”

Mayor Oh said, “I hope that the ruling and opposition parties can also begin discussions on ‘pincet welfare’ for the underprivileged,” and appealed to the Democratic Party, “Please join us in ‘walking alongside the underprivileged.’”

On this day, the National Assembly plenary session passed the ‘National 250,000 Won Support Act (Special Measures Act for the Payment of People’s Livelihood Recovery Support Funds)’ led by the Democratic Party of Korea and other opposition parties. The Office of the President stated its position on this bill, stating that “it is not very effective and is unconstitutional.”
