Mayor Oh’s side “Part of Seoul’s municipal administration”
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who is considered a candidate for the ruling party’s next presidential election, is broadening his stride by meeting with the People Power Party’s Seoul region-elected candidate and the failed candidate, and then meeting with the Democratic Party of Korea’s Seoul region-elected candidate. Mayor Oh said it was “part of Seoul’s municipal administration,” but the ruling party interprets it as “a move with the next presidency in mind.”
According to the political circles on the 24th, Mayor Oh will hold a luncheon with the Democratic Party’s first-term elected representative from the Seoul district and Seoul Metropolitan Party executive officials at the Seoul Mayor’s official residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the 30th. A Democratic Party president-elect said, “16 people, including 8 first-term elected officials and 8 executive members, are scheduled to attend,” and “there could be more.” The meeting was first proposed by Mayor Oh. All eight first-elected Democratic Party members expressed their intention to attend.
Mayor Oh previously met with the People Power Party’s failed candidates on the 19th and 22nd, and on the 23rd, he met with the People Power Party’s Seoul-area elected candidates. This means that they are expanding their reach regardless of the ruling or opposition party. Mayor Oh’s side is wary of any expanded interpretation, saying that the meeting between the mayor of Seoul and local politicians is natural. However, in the meeting with Mayor Oh and People Power Party officials, there were discussions about the overall political world beyond Seoul city administration, including an analysis of the reasons for the general election defeat that “there was no policy and strategy” and a negative evaluation of Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung’s 250,000 won livelihood recovery subsidy. It is said that the conversation went back and forth.
There is a view within the ruling party that Mayor Oh’s ‘meal politics’ is not unrelated to the presidential election. A ruling party official said, “The crushing defeat in this general election has drawn attention to Mayor Oh’s pale color and appeal in Seoul, a difficult area for the ruling party.” However, Mayor Oh said, “The presidential election is still three years away,” and “We have met with lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties regardless of the general election.”
