The assassination attempt on Donald Trump “overshadowed” conversations about whether President Joe Biden should drop out of the presidential race, Ohio Democratic Representative Greg Landsman said on CNN Tuesday.
Landsman, whose seat is “competitive” at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, suggested last week that he was “more” joining Democrats who have publicly called for Biden to resign after his disastrous performance in the debate against Donald Trump last month.
However, that was before the attempt on Trump’s life ended the presidential race.
On Tuesday’s “CNN This Morning,” Kasie Hunt asked Landsman, “Are you ready to tell President Biden that you think he should resign?”
“No. First of all, what we all saw this Saturday was an assassination attempt on former President Trump’s life,” Landsman replied. “That came up, as you can imagine, in the conversations we had at home.”
Landsman said he has expressed his concerns to party leaders and that he and Biden will leave the decision.
“I have expressed my concern about the president’s ability to deal with Donald Trump to the leadership,” Landsman said. “They will make the decision, or he will make it, we hope for their input.”
In his comments last week, Landsman said he wanted to talk to his constituents in Ohio before making a decision about the president’s political future.
Speaking to Hunt, Landsman also took issue with Trump’s vice presidential pick, JD Vance, criticizing his “inflammatory” language and claiming it goes against the message of unity that Trump is trying to convey.
“As someone from southwest Ohio who grew up around the same time and probably five miles from JD Vance (we’re both from Butler County), it’s a problem that he (Trump) elected someone who is divisive and uses language inflammatory,” Landsman said.
