- The couple’s young children, ages 1 and 4, were found unharmed inside the residence.
- mckee and Monique Tepe were married from 2015 to 2017.
McKee appeared briefly in Illinois court, stating only his name before agreeing to return to Ohio. His public defender, Carrie Poirier, stated he intends to plead not guilty. “Mr. McKee believes that the most expeditious manner in which he may defend himself against the charges pending in Ohio and to plead not guilty would be to waive his right to an extradition hearing,” Poirier said.
The case has gripped Ohioans, especially after the Tepes were discovered dead from gunshot wounds in their Columbus home nearly two weeks ago. Neighbors alerted authorities after hearing the couple’s two young children crying inside. Both children were found safe.
Investigators say a person was captured on surveillance footage walking near the tepe home between 2 and 5 a.m.the night of the murders. A vehicle seen in the area was allegedly traced back to McKee in Rockford, Illinois, where he worked as a vascular surgeon.
A Seemingly Amicable Divorce
McKee and Monique Tepe were married in 2015 but divorced in 2017.court records suggest the separation was amicable, and authorities have yet to disclose a motive for the alleged killings. Monique Tepe later married Spencer Tepe,a dentist,in 2020,and they had a child together.
The attack baffled those who knew the couple, who were preparing to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary. There were no signs of forced entry, leading investigators to believe the victims knew their attacker.
McKee faces two counts of aggravated murder in Ohio and could receive a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted. He is expected to be transported to Ohio this week.
