Ohio Woman Sentenced to Work in Fast Food Restaurant After Throwing Burrito Bowl at Employee

Rosemary Hayne of Ohio has been sentenced to 90 days in jail, with the option to work at a fast food restaurant for 20 hours a week instead, after she threw her freshly made Chipotle burrito bowl in the face of the employee who served it to her. The incident, which was captured on video and went viral, occurred at a Chipotle in the Cleveland suburb of Parma.

At a hearing on November 28, Hayne was originally sentenced to 180 days in jail, but Parma Municipal Court Judge Timothy P. Gilligan suspended 90 of those days and gave her the option of working at a fast food restaurant to reduce her sentence. Hayne agreed to the deal, and her jail time has been delayed until March 12, 2024, to give her time to secure a job and complete the agreed-upon hours.

During the sentencing, Judge Gilligan emphasized that Hayne’s behavior was unacceptable and that she needed to learn empathy. The employee, 17-year-old Emily Russell, also addressed the court, stating that she quit her job at Chipotle because she was traumatized by the incident.

Hayne apologized to Russell in court and stated that she acted that way because she didn’t like the look of her burrito bowl. However, the judge admonished her, pointing out that her behavior was still unjustified.

Gilligan’s decision has been met with support from Russell, who believes that Hayne should experience what working in fast food is really like. The judge also ordered Hayne to serve two months of probation and refrain from having contact with the victim.

The sentencing serves as a reminder of the consequences of mistreating service workers and the importance of showing empathy towards others.
