OIC calls for peaceful and diplomatic resolution of conflicts (Yaounde Declaration)

Yaounde – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Friday called for the need to resolve persistent or emerging disputes and conflicts through negotiation, mediation, conciliation and other peaceful means.

In a final statement at the end of the work of the 50th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC, held in Yaounde, the Organization stressed the need to opt for peaceful means to resolve conflicts by implementing political, diplomatic and legal mechanisms based on the universally recognized principles and norms of international law. In this sense, the Council expressed its concerns about the ongoing armed conflicts in the world, stressing the imperative of ending hostilities, avoiding loss of human lives, increasing humanitarian aid and giving priority to diplomacy. The Foreign Ministers also reiterated their unequivocal support for the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter, including the non-use of force, equality of sovereignty, respect for territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs and the peaceful settlement of disputes. Regarding the Palestinian issue, the OIC reaffirmed its solidarity with the Palestinian people who have been living in a dramatic humanitarian situation that has lasted for more than 10 months, following the Israeli aggression that has cost the lives of more than 40,000 Palestinians. In this regard, it called on the countries of the world to take urgent action to put an end to the crime of genocide committed by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and to implement the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice. Participants in this two-day session, held under the theme “Development of intra-OIC transport and communication infrastructure: A major instrument to combat poverty and insecurity”, notably examined the latest developments in the Palestinian issue, the Middle East peace process and the evolving situation in the Sahel region. This meeting was also an opportunity to address political, economic and social issues, as well as questions related to disarmament, and cooperation between the OIC and other international and regional organizations and groupings.
