Oil spill in Mauritius sea Captain jailed for 20 months

In July 2020, the Japanese oil tanker MV Wakashio crashed in the sea off Mauritius. The thousand tons of oil that was on this ship has come out a little bit and mixed in the sea.

Due to this the whole area was covered with black. The oil spilled over several kilometers, making it impossible to clean. Thus the water is polluted. Not only water but also air is polluted. The mixing of oil with salt water turned out to be a treat for the marine life there.

As a result, the marine environment became severely polluted and many marine life, including fish, died. Oil ship captain Sunil Kumar Nandeswar and second-in-command (deputy captain) Janendra Tilakaratne have been indicted in a Port Louis court on the island of Mauritius in connection with the accident.

At the end of the months-long investigation, Captain Sunil Kumar admitted that he had consumed alcohol during a party on the ship. He also apologized for the mistake he had made. The ship’s vice-captain also admitted the mistake.

As the trial ended last week, the court last week declared both the captain and vice-captain guilty. Also, the sentence details for them were announced today.

The judge sentenced Captain Sunil Kumar Nandeswar and Vice Captain Janendra Tilakaratne to 20 months imprisonment each. The judge said the captain and vice-captain had acted irresponsibly in the entire crash of the oil tanker and the loss of life of marine life.
