“Plays that are solved by one player have the side effect of splitting the team up”

Coach Masaji Ogino, who is leading the OK Savings Bank men’s professional volleyball team during a training camp in Japan, is putting in effort to reduce the skill gap between the players.

OK Savings Bank tested its strength by playing against Toray Arrows of the 2023-2024 Japan V-League Division 1 on the 26th, and then played a practice match against Tsukuba University on the 27th. It will play evaluation matches against Toray again on the 29th and 30th.

Coach Ogino said on the 29th, “I think the practice match will be of great help in introducing the new system,” and “To be honest, I’m not satisfied with the content of the match, but I think it will be a good experience for the players as we build the team.”

OK Savings Bank made a big change to the team during the off-season. New foreign player Luconi (Italy) and Asian quota player Zhang Binglong (China) joined. However, it remains to be seen whether they can fill the void left by Leo (Hyundai Capital), who played as the ace last season.

The setter position, which has been particularly up and down, including Lee Min-gyu who left due to injury, has not yet found a clear answer. Following existing members Park Tae-seong and Kang Jeong-min, Jeong Jin-hyeok joined from Korean Air, but it seems too early to draw a big picture. Newly recruited middle blocker Jin Seong-tae and outside hitter Shin Jang-ho will need time to fully integrate into the team.

That is why Coach Ogino said this training camp is more important than ever. Coach Ogino said, “Torey’s players have excellent individual skills. I watched to see how well our team could systematically play against this team,” and “I think the results were better than I expected.”

He continued, “I just wish our team’s player base could be a little thicker. I want to create a team that can reduce the gap between high-level and low-level players,” and “I want to see if there are any players who can achieve results through this practice match.”

Dorey showed off his power by making the players on the court score evenly, using his organization. There were almost no scenes where the toss was concentrated on a single player. The play that Coach Ogino wanted to show was exactly the style of play that Dorey played.

Coach Ogino is currently examining all 19 players during this spring training. This is to break away from the offensive style that relies on Leo and instead present organized volleyball in which all players play evenly.

This could further serve as an opportunity to change the reality of Korean volleyball, which relies solely on foreign players’ attacks. For that to happen, ‘Ogino volleyball’ must experience success.

Coach Ogino emphasized, “If one player stands out and does everything on his own, it will eventually have the negative effect of splitting up the team,” and “If you play as a team, you will inevitably make fewer mistakes.”

He said, “Every team aims to win, but if OK Savings Bank volleyball is fun and there are spectators who think it is a team they want to go to the stadium to cheer for, I think the results will follow proportionally.”
