Oklahoma Women’s Gymnastics Poised for Dominance in 2026 Season

The University of Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team begins its quest for an eighth national championship on Saturday at the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad in West Valley City, Utah. The meet will pit the top-ranked Sooners against formidable opponents – No. 2 LSU, No. 4 UCLA, and No. 5 Utah – in a podium meet scheduled for 3 p.m. CT and broadcast live on ABC for the third consecutive year.

This marks the fourth straight season the Sooners will launch their campaign with a road competition, having last opened in Norman in 2022 against Alabama.

A Legacy of Success: Celebrating Two Decades of Kindler’s Leadership

The 2026 season is especially significant for the Oklahoma program, as it celebrates 20 years of service from head coach K.J. Kindler, alongside associate head coaches Lou Ball and Tom Haley, and athletic trainer Jenn Richardson. This coaching staff represents unparalleled longevity and achievement in collegiate gymnastics.

Since their arrival in 2007, the quartet has amassed an astounding record: seven NCAA Championships (2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2025), 13 top-three national finishes, 15 consecutive regional titles, 15 conference championships, and over 200 All-America honors. Their overall record at OU stands at an extraordinary 544-54-2, boasting a remarkable .911 winning percentage. The staff also guided the team that currently holds the NCAA Team Scoring Record.

Kindler’s athletes have secured 18 individual national championships, and 32 gymnasts have earned conference of the year awards. moreover, three Sooners have been honored with the prestigious Honda Sport Award for Gymnastics, with Maggie Nichols claiming the program’s sole AAI Award in 2020.

Kindler’s Hall of Fame Induction

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, head coach K.J. Kindler was announced as a member of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame class of 2026 on January 6th, with her official induction scheduled for August.

In her two decades leading the Sooners, Kindler has transformed the program into a national powerhouse. Since arriving in Norman in 2006, her leadership has consistently delivered championship-caliber performances. A four-time National Coach of the Year, kindler has guided Oklahoma to unprecedented heights, establishing a standard of consistency and excellence rarely seen in collegiate athletics. Her current collegiate coaching record is 638-105-3 (.857),with a stellar 544-52-2 (.911) record specifically at OU.

Road warriors and a Challenging Schedule

The Sooners have proven their ability to excel away from home, maintaining a dominant record on the road. Since 2015, thay have achieved a 244-15 record, translating to a 94.2% win rate. This includes a 61-6 record at true away competitions and an impressive 185-9 mark at neutral sites.

The 2026 season will immediately test this road prowess, as the Sooners face a demanding January schedule featuring six top-ten teams. The season opener against No. 2 LSU, No. 4 UCLA,and No. 5 Utah represents a significant challenge.

  • The squad returns 15 routines from the 2025 national championship team, including nine from sophomores Addison Done,Elle Mueller, and Lily Pederson.
  • Under head coach K.J. Kindler, OU holds a 28-3 all-time record in season openers and hasn’t lost a season opener since 2016.
  • Faith Torrez is the No. 1 returning athlete in the all-around and on both beam and floor.
  • The Sooners are replacing 50% of their routines on bars and floor, with one routine needing replacement on vault.

Looking Ahead

Conference action will resume on Friday, January 16th, as the Sooners travel to Columbia, Missouri, for a national championship rematch against No. 7 Missouri – their first trip to Mizzou as 2012 when both teams were members of the Big 12 Conference.
