Öko-Test Finds Sodasan Bathroom Cleaner as Weak as Plain Water

Consumer watchdog testing of 25 bathroom cleaners in the September 2026 issue of Öko-Test revealed that no product achieved a top rating, while a product from Sodasan failed basic cleaning tasks. Budget-friendly options from dm and Edeka secured high marks, showing that steep prices do not guarantee performance.

Bathrooms accumulate stubborn residues like limescale, soap scum, and water spots, leaving shoppers dependent on specialized sprays to restore shine without endless scrubbing. A rigorous laboratory evaluation of 25 common bathroom cleaners tested the performance, ingredients, and label claims of these household essentials. The findings show that higher prices and familiar brand names offer little assurance of actual cleaning power.

Testing Results and the Sodasan Performance Failure

Not a single product in the lineup earned the top rating of very good. Twelve cleaners managed a rating ofgood, ten received a satisfactory mark, two were ratedpoor, and one failed completely according to the 09/2026 edition of Öko-Test.

The lowest mark went to the Sodasan Dusche & Bad cleaner, which struggled with the fundamental job of lifting vertical limescale deposits. Laboratory measurements showed that its cleaning action was so weak it was roughly comparable to using plain water. Even after a 30-minute soak, the product removed less than 20 percent of the test grime.

Top-Performing Budget Cleaners in the Evaluation

While premium options can cost nearly €7 per liter, the analysis found that the four top-performing products were remarkably affordable while successfully tackling tough residues.

  • Denk mit Badreiniger (dm) priced at €1.13 per liter
  • Denk mit Badreiniger with Fresh Scent (dm) priced at €0.85 per liter
  • Frosch Dusche & Bad-Reiniger Citrus (Werner & Merz) priced at €3.98 per liter
  • Gut & Günstig Bad Reiniger (Edeka) priced at €0.85 per liter

Ingredient Safety and Discrepancies in Soak Times

Chemical formulations faced less criticism than cleaning power. Laboratory checks for allergenic fragrances, isothiazolinones, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde releasers revealed no disqualifying flaws among the tested formulas. However, testers noted an elevated formic acid content in 13 products, a substance that can irritate the respiratory tract.

A major disconnect emerged between package instructions and laboratory reality. While spray bottles typically recommend waiting three to five minutes before wiping, tests demonstrated that many cleaners required 12.5 to 20 minutes to eliminate at least 90 percent of soap scum.

Surface Selection and Alternative Solutions

Selecting the right product requires matching chemical composition to bathroom materials. Acidic cleaners dissolve calcium carbonate effectively, but they can damage sensitive surfaces like marble or limestone.

For hard water buildup, simple alternatives exist outside commercial aisles. Dissolving one teaspoon of citric acid powder in half a liter of water provides an effective homemade solution that breaks down limescale through a direct chemical reaction. While vinegar also removes scale, prolonged exposure can ruin rubber seals and natural stone.
