Twenty looks at the Child Jesus

Olivier Messiaen: Twenty looks at the Child Jesus. Anthony Cheung: Live Ear Show! Toru Takemitsu: Rain Tree Sketch II. Tristan Murail: Bells of farewell, and a smile… György Kurtag: … humble look at Olivier Messiaen… Jonathan Harvey: Tombeau de Messiaen. Bertrand Chamayou (piano).

Composed in 1944, the cycle of Twenty looks at the Child Jesus resembles a monumental journey of faith on the keyboard of an instrument that releases the power and magnetism of a celestial chime. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) expresses his creative wonder for two hours, between sweet revelation (Gaze of the Father) and radiant exaltation (Gaze of the Church of Love). Bertrand Chamayou gives thanks to this luminous music by the gradation, nuanced or contrasted, of a veritable stained-glass piano. His playing, of penetrating intelligence, also transfigures the homage paid to Olivier Messiaen by a few inspired successors. In joy (Anthony Cheung), contemplation (Toru Takemitsu), resonance (Tristan Murail), meditation (György Kurtag) or kaleidoscopic vision (Jonathan Harvey with the use of a soundtrack). In his album Outlaws, published in March 2020, flautist Ludivine Issambourg paid tribute to the compositions of her colleague, the American Hubert Laws. For this new disc, Supernova, she finds the group she founded ten years ago, Antiloops. Here with Nicolas Derand on keyboards, Timothée Robert on bass and Julien Sérié on drums, in place of Maxime Zampieri. We perceive the jazz-rock of the 1970s, without the drifts towards speed pyrotechnics, jazz with a touch of pop in the same period of the productions of the CTI phonographic company of Creed Taylor – Laws recorded several albums for the label – , contributions of the drum’n’bass style of the British electro scene of the end of the 1990s, hip-hop colors by the interventions of turntable player DJ Green. This constitutes a well-defined universe, homogeneous from these multiple sources, by which Ludivine Issambourg and her comrades lead towards a music all of melodic imagination. Sylvain Siclier
