“I lived far too well and well. I was lucky. I don’t know how much I have left.” The world famous photographer and creative Oliviero Toscani, 82 years old, he speaks without filters about the illness that struck him. And it reveals that there is no cure. In a long interview with Corriere della Sera he talks about his life and reveals that he has lost 40 kilograms in a year: “At the end of June when I woke up with swollen legs, I started struggling to walk. At the hospital they diagnosed me with a heart problem.”

Toscani then talks about the tests that followed, until the diagnosis: “Amyloidosis. In practice, proteins deposit at certain critical points and block the body. And you will die. There is no cure.” And again: “I don’t know how much I have left.”

“In October I got viral pneumonia and also Covid, they pulled my hair. I also think that I was dead, for a few minutes.” But “I am not afraid of death. As long as it does not hurt. And then – he says – I have lived too much and well, I am very spoiled. I never had a master, a salary, I was always free,“.

It is clear that he focuses on photography: “I don’t feel it anymore – he says – I am free from everything”. But “I regret the things I didn’t do, not the things I did”.

“The idea of ​​getting old didn’t exist. Until the day before I was like this, I worked like I was 30 years old. Then one morning I woke up and suddenly I was 80 years old.”

Toscani then explains that he would like to be remembered for his dedication. And the work he is most proud of is the work done – he explains – on the killing of Sant’Anna di Stazzema.

“I have always been privileged and especially lucky, I really say it (…). Living like this does not interest me. I must call my friend Cappato, I have known him since he was a child . and then I feel it.”
