Olot is a unique club in the current football scene. Involved in multiple social causes with organizations in the region, the Garrotxins will hold the last solidarity event of the year with a match that will pit them against Barça Atlètic (12:00 p.m.) on December 30 at the Municipal d’Olot. All ticket proceeds will go exclusively to Cáritas la Garrotxa.
Joan Agustí, president of Olot, believes in football as a tool for social change and explains the reasons for the party: “Football is one of the best social tools available today. We collaborate with six organizations in the third sector, one of them is Caritas. We thought that December 30 could be a Christmas party, a solidarity party, a social party. We think we can have a good entry and we will be very happy if things go well». Agustí adds that the reason is that there can be very different audiences in the field: “These are the days when people are more sensitive and are also willing to come to watch football, people who like football and people who don’t.”
L’Olot and Cáritas have been collaborating for some time. In fact, the organization has appeared on the Olotina shirt as a sponsor for twelve seasons and the game has already established itself as a season-long classic. The various organizers hope that the claim to be able to see Barça Atlético will help to have a large attendance, although no spectators or revenue targets have been set. After evaluating different options, Olot and Cáritas decided to sell tickets at 5 and 10 euros.
Although the match is not included in the collaboration agreement that Olot and Barça have, Agustí recognizes that “the good synergies between the two clubs” have made it possible to find a point of understanding.
The chief executive of Olot also wanted to acknowledge that the referees come without receiving anything. In addition, the club will assume any expenses that may arise from the organization.
Olot will end the year with this charity event, but it will certainly not be the last of a club that has incorporated social change and just causes through football into its DNA, as Agustí comments: “We finished the season playing in the penitentiary center of Puig de les Basses and we will end the year with this match. We believe that football is a good way to send positive messages to the whole of society, to contribute to integration and inclusion».
