One competitor less for Leo Neugebauer and Niklas Kaul: Decathlon world champion Pierce LePage (28) has cancelled his Olympic start due to injury. The Canadian suffered a slipped disc in April and now has to undergo back surgery to get fit again for the next season.
“The last few months have been very stressful, to say the least,” said LePage, who secured World Championship gold in Budapest with 8,909 points, in an Instagram video: “It’s really hard to see your dream somehow slipping out of your hands, even though you’re trying as hard as you can to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a dip in the Seine on Wednesday. The 65-year-old got into the murky water wearing goggles and a wetsuit to show that the river is clean enough for the Summer Olympics. She felt “really good,” said Hidalgo, who stayed in the water for about five minutes in front of numerous spectators, submerging her face and swimming against the current.
