Last year, former Olympic champion Katarina Witt suffered a severe herniated disc. That’s why she had to undergo emergency surgery.

Katarina Witt made history as a figure skater: she became Olympic champion in 1984 and 1988 and won the world championship title four times. After her career on the ice ended, she made a name for herself in front of the camera and has since worked as a presenter, actress and entrepreneur. Sport still plays a big role in her life, and the 58-year-old still keeps fit today. This came in handy when she suffered a serious injury last year.

“My happiness was my own good fitness”

In the spring of 2023, Katarina Witt had “a pretty severe herniated disc – with emergency surgery and everything,” the former competitive athlete told “SuperIllu”. However, because she does sports regularly, she recovered quite quickly: “My luck was ultimately my own good fitness. So I coped with the injury much better than some people who don’t do any sports.” In the hospital, everyone was amazed at how quickly she got out of bed again, says Katarina Witt.

“This shows how important physical fitness is and how important it is to strengthen yourself with preventative training,” added Katarina Witt. It is also necessary for your mental health to be physically active. “Exercising helps me clear my head.”

Katarina Witt has been running her own fitness studio in Potsdam since 2019, which she visits regularly. “I train here twice a week if possible, and I also go jogging and walking. The fresh air is incredibly good for me. And when I’m out and about, I explore the surrounding area.” Shortly before special events such as balls or film shoots, the ex-professional athlete said that she trains every day.
