A week after correcting Sporting at the Vélodrome, Olympique de Marseille did it again on Wednesday in Lisbon (0-2). A second victory in Group D of the Champions League which completely revives the chances of the Marseillais to reach the knockout stages.

The renaissance operation continues for OM. The Marseillais won a second consecutive victory on Wednesday October 12 against Sporting Portugal (0-2) which completely revived them in the race for the round of 16. They are now second in the group, behind Tottenham, winner against Frankfurt.

In a José Alvalade stadium that was not completely full but largely animated by the French supporters who had made the trip, OM quickly took over the match. The high and aggressive pressing of Alexis Sanchez’s teammates allows OM to keep the Lisbon people running. Under the impetus in particular of Nuno Tavares, Amine Harit, Matteo Guendouzi and thanks to the leadership of Alexis Sanchez, the opportunities are not long in coming.

But, as in the first leg, it is ultimately Sporting Portugal who are their own enemy. This week, the culprit is called Ricardo Esgaio. Already warned after an elbow in the face on his compatriot Tavares, he then cuts Harit into the box. Immediate expulsion for second yellow card while Guendouzi is happy to open the scoring (20th, 0-1).

Sanchez doubles down

Not yet satiated or safe, OM continue to push. Alexis Sanchez sends a powerful strike that Israel deflects with difficulty (25th). Then he receives a perfect pass from Harit following a millimeter pass from Mbemba on the right that the Chilean finishes perfectly. If the flag was raised initially for offside, the VAR reverses the decision and confirms the Marseille break (30th, 0-2).

At the foot of the wall, Ruben Amorim makes a double change to reorganize his team. Captain Coates gives way to Marsa while Edwards, injured in the adductor, is replaced by Alexandropoulos. A coaching that seems to bear fruit since Trincão obtains the Portuguese first round (37th).

Back from the locker room, Sporting started strong. Gonçalves centers in the surface and pushes Lopez to intervene in the air. The ball lands on Reis who shoots. Clauss intervenes (46th).

Second red card

However, OM quickly regained control. He quickly reinstalls his high block to put the pressure on the Lisbon people and seek the third goal. Harit relies on Clauss in the right lane who hands him over to the penalty spot. At the end of the race, he was unable to frame (55th).

In their quest for victory, OM will be well helped by a second red card for the Greens and Whites. Gonçalves receives two yellow cards in quick succession and leaves his partners at nine! At fault on Balerdi, his bad reaction earned him this exclusion (60th). Tudor took the opportunity to rotate the workforce by bringing out Clauss, Guendouzi and Bailly. A few moments later, Harit gives way to Payet. Despite their efforts, however, the Marseillais failed to score a third goal.

However, this second consecutive victory in the Champions League should give the Marseillais confidence in view of their clash on Sunday against PSG. A Paris in full doubt, moreover, between disappointing matches and imbroglio Mbappé.
