The delta strain of coronavirus remains the dominant variant, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The new omicron strain has so far been identified in 38 states.

“Omicron has now been identified in 38 countries across all six WHO regions, with the main increase in infections in Africa. But the “delta” option remains dominant in the world, “said WHO expert Maria van Kerkhove during an online session answering questions about the situation with the coronavirus (quoted by RIA Novosti).

The National Institute of Infectious Diseases of South Africa reported that the first new strain of the coronavirus “omicron” was discovered on November 8. This happened in the province of Guatenge. The new strain was identified in South Africa, Hong Kong and a number of African countries, later cases of infection were detected in Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Israel, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Czech Republic, Sweden and other countries.

The omicron variant has not yet been identified in Russia. Now in Russia they are checking what strain two people who arrived from South Africa were infected with.
