Road block
Trade unions across the country staged a two-day strike to condemn the federal government’s anti-labor stance. A full-scale strike on behalf of the unions took place in Puduvai.
The DMK-Congress alliance also supported the blockade. Meanwhile, there were protests on behalf of political parties and unions.
4 MLAs arrested
DMK near Puthuvai Anna statue. Siva MLA, state organizer and leader of the Legislative Opposition Led by the DMK and the Workers’ Progressive Union, they staged a road blockade.
Among them are SB Sivakumar, MLAs Anibal Kennedy, Senthilkumar, Sampath, Deputy Organizers AK Kumar, Sun Kumaravel, Kaliyaperumal, Gunadilipan, Amuthakumar, Treasurer Lokayan, Chief Executive Committee members Thariyanathan, Ilangovan, J.V.S. Many, including Saravanan, attended.
The police were arrested by the victims. All those arrested were detained in Karikudon and released shortly after.
INTUC, AITUC
INTUC The unions are led by state president Balaji and Congress leader AV Subramaniam. Executives Sokkalingam, Narasingam, Gnanasekaran and many others were involved in the road blockade at the Indira Gandhi statue. This caused a severe traffic crisis in the area. Following this, the police on security duty arrested them and drove them away.
AITUC The unions marched from the statue of Subbaiah to the bus stand and protested at the bus stand gate. Saleem, the Communist Secretary of State for India, joined the AITUC in the protest. General Secretary Sethu Selvam presided. Urulayanpet police arrested those involved in the riot.
CITU, Liberation Leopards
CITU The unions staged a picket at the Raja Theater meeting. CITU to picket. Chairman Murugan and General Secretary Seenuvasan presided.
The picket was attended by Marxist Communist Secretary of State Rajangam, executives Kolanchiappan, Praburaj, Mathivanan, Saravanan and many others. They were arrested by the supermarket police.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and trade unions led by Senthil, the state secretary of the Workers’ Liberation Front (PLF), staged a sit-in at the Ajanta meeting. The party’s general secretary Devapozhilan, city administrators Durai Jayakumar, Ashok, Kanniyappan, Cheliyan and many others were present. They were arrested by the police.
1,304 people were arrested
Similarly, members of the Federation of Government Employees’ Unions marched from the Kamban Gallery to Annasila to protest. They were arrested by the Odisha police. New Delhi State Working People’s Alliance Murthy led a picket near Annasila. They were arrested by the Odisha police.
Protests also took place in Madakadipattu, Trincomalee, Chetarapattu, Villianur, Bagur and Thavalakuppam. A total of 4 DMK workers were killed during the riots at 12 places in Puthuvai. 1,304 people were arrested, including MLAs. They were all released shortly after.
