On September 22, on the occasion of the finale of the European Mobility Week, Sofia joins the European initiative “Day without cars”. The aim is to encourage citizens to move on foot, to use more public transport and/or alternative transport. This was announced by the press center of the Metropolitan Municipality.
From 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on September 22, vehicles are prohibited from entering the area bounded by Todor Aleksandrov Blvd., Kn. Al. Dondukov Blvd., Vasil Levski Blvd., Graf Ignatiev St., “Alabin”, “Positano” Str. and “Hristo Botev” Blvd. There will be traffic on the border streets and boulevards of the zone, and cars with a special regime of the Emergency Service, the fire department, the police, and public transport will be able to enter it , cars of the residents of the area, as well as those serving the coordinated events and solemn ceremonies.The streets closed to traffic in the city center can be seen here.
During the day, rides will be held:
From 11:00 a.m., the Deputy Mayor for Transport, Eng. Iliyan Pavlov, will lead a bicycle procession, starting at “Al. Stamboliyski” in front of the church “St. Nedelya”. It will pass along the boulevards “Kn. Al. Dondukov”, “Vasil Levski”, “Patriarch Evtimii” and “Hristo Botev”, and they will be temporarily closed until all cyclists have passed. In the closed area of Blvd. “Al. Stamboliyski” will have various events related to transport – a tram simulator, a transport quiz from 14:00, free riding of electric bicycles and scooters, CGM will charge free cards for students up to 14 years old, there will be open lessons in yoga, tai chi and zumba.
A bike relay will also take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m
The organization of movement for the bicycle relay foresees the closure of central streets, the movement of part of the city transport also changes. It will start from “Gen. Yosif V. Gurko” Street in the part between “Vasil Levski” Blvd. and “Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi” Blvd., without affecting “Vasil Levski” Blvd. and will run along the route: “Gen. Yosif V. Gurko”, “Evlogi i Hristo Georgievi” blvd., “Bulgaria” blvd., “Pencho Slaveykov” blvd., next to “Vitosha” blvd.
The Metropolitan Municipality, together with the Center for Urban Mobility, also organizes an open day at three public transport depots between 11:00 and 16:00 – the “Krasna Polyana” depot, the “Zemlyane” garage and the “Zemlyane” metro depot. can be reached not only by the regular public transport lines, but also by a special retro bus line with the number 202, which will depart from “Vazrazhdane” square every 25 minutes and drive to the “Zemlyane” garage with Ikarus and Mercedes О305G buses at the tram depot, all children and fans of transport will be able to see how a tram is driven and look at miniature models of public transport, and in the bus garage they will enjoy restored vintage Škoda and Chavdar buses.
The events are part of the celebration of European Mobility Week between 16 and 22 September.
