Traffic on the temporary bridge will be organized in the same way as on the old bridge until now – the reverse movement will be regulated by traffic lights, a 1.5-meter wide sidewalk is intended for pedestrian and cyclist traffic.

Also on Friday, August 30, at At 10.30, Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens will familiarize himself with the progress of construction works on the Salaca bridge.

The temporary bridge has five spans, four river spans and two bank abutments. In the places of the shore supports, a retaining groove wall has been built, on it a shore support has been built, which serves as an anchor for the entire temporary bridge. The roadway of the bridge is 4.5 m wide.

To test the load-bearing capacity of the temporary bridge, it was loaded on August 28 using four 30-31 ton trucks. The inspection found that the bridge is fit for operation.

After the traffic is switched over, the builder will start dismantling the old bridge, which is planned to be completely completed within three months. At the same time, the construction of bored piles for the foundations of the new bridge’s pillars will begin. It is planned that the works will continue without the winter technological break.

It has already been announced that the existing bridge over Salaca will be completely demolished and a new four-span reinforced concrete girder bridge with new supports and steel girders will be built instead. On both sides of the bridge, a pedestrian sidewalk is planned to be created in the underbridge part. On the Ainaži side, the underbridge sidewalk will be connected to the existing sidewalk structure, which was built along the Salacas River, on the Riga side, the sidewalk will be created locally, and new stairs will be built at its end. Pedestrian infrastructure will also be built on the bridge. The works are planned to be completed in the fall of 2025.

The works are carried out by a general partnership (PS) NB&Tilts for the contract price of 14,971,552.94 euros (without VAT). PS is made up of companies SIA Norde building and SIA TILTS. The development of the bridge project was ordered by the municipality of Salacgrīva, the author of the project – SIA Project 3construction supervision will be provided by AS Road project.

The bridge over Salaca on the national main road Riga (Baltezers) – Estonian border (Ainaži) (A1) is part of the European transport network (TEN-T) and is also part of the European road route E67 or Baltic Way a section that provides local and interstate traffic as well as military mobility. The construction of a new bridge is co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility (CIF) within the framework of the third call for military mobility projects.
