On Holy Tuesday, the church mentions the Parable of the Ten Virgins. The evening after sunset on Holy Tuesday is the third consecutive and final evening on which the “Following the Bridegroom” liturgy is celebrated.
After entering Jerusalem, Jesus Christ preached in the temple and told the Parable of the ten virgins to his disciples.
It says that five of the virgins were wise and the other five were foolish. The prudence of the five virgins consisted in their lamps being full, i.e. full of the virtues, the feat, the efforts of the Orthodox Christian life. And the rest of the virgins had lamps that did not have enough oil.
With this parable on Holy Tuesday, the church calls Christians to make spiritual efforts on themselves, to cleanse themselves of their shortcomings, to turn away from their vices, to be transformed and go to a pure, righteous and holy life in God.
