Digital extra: the first two performances of the Venetian playwright signed by the director. On newsstands and App, the new Goldoni show by Lavia at Argentina in Rome

«In the works of the great Venetian playwright there is always love and erotic passion… albeit represented with wise prudence, to avoid being censored». It’s Gabriele Lavia who talks about Carlo Goldoni, recalling his first experiences with the Venetian author’s theatre, with Il Vero Amico in 1978 and La Donna Vendetta in 1983. In the Theme of the Day, the digital-only daily extra of the App of «la Lettura», on Wednesday 1st November, Emilia Costantini interviews the Milanese actor and director about those first two shows, while in the new issue of «la Lettura», #622, on newsstands and on this App, she gets told the show A curious accident (also by Goldoni) of which Lavia is director and protagonist and which will be on stage at the Teatro Argentina in Rome until 19 November.

In addition to the Topic of the Day and the most recent issue of the supplement previewed on Saturdays, the «la Lettura» App for smartphones and tablets also offers the archive of all the issues released since 2011. Subscribing to the App costs 3, 99 euros per month or 39.99 per year, with one week free. The subscription can also be subscribed from desktop starting from this page. For subscribers, the contents are also visible from PC and Mac from their Profile page.

In the section of the App dedicated to Themes you can also discover the editorial news reported by Giulia Ziino for children and teenagers, aged 5 to 12, linked to Halloween, while in the new issue of «la Lettura» and in the App itself two witches of author and adults: Antonella Lattanzi talks about «The Witches of Eastwick» by John Updike which returns to bookshops for Sur (translation by Lorenzo Merici, pp. 384, €20) and Cristina Taglietti writes about «The Witch» by Shirley Jackson, in bookshops for Adelphi (translation by Silvia Pareschi, pp. 66, €10).

Also in the Themes you can read a preview of the incipit of Murtagh, the new fantasy by Christopher Paolini, the fifth of the Eragon saga, which will be released on November 7th simultaneously worldwide, in Italy by Rizzoli. In the new issue of «la Lettura», on newsstands and on the App, Pierdomenico Baccalario’s interview with Paolini who will be among the guests of Lucca Comics & Games: at the event, scheduled from 1st to 5th November in Lucca, «la Lettura » dedicates twelve special pages.

Also available in the Themes section is Stefano Bucci’s focus on Piero Gilardi, the great master of Natura Carpets (1965) who passed away last March 5th at the age of eighty, among the protagonists in his Turin of the 2023 edition of Artissima and of a exhibition at Pav, Living Art Park. And Bucci’s report on the new issue is dedicated to Artissima 2023 (from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 November at the Oval in Turin). Again, still among the Themes, a passage from the new book Anima by Michel Onfray (in bookstores from 4 November for Ponte alle Grazie), which in the supplement speaks to Stefano Montefiori.

Returning to the issue of «la Lettura» on newsstands and the App, it opens with two books that in different ways reveal private anxieties and fragments of the life of an Oscar-winning director, Gabriele Salvatores, and a Nobel-winning writer, the Austrian Elfriede Jelinek
. Salvatores, who welcomes «la Lettura» into his Milanese home while he is editing the new film «Napoli-New York», wrote the autobiography Let us lose (with Paola Jacobi; in bookshops on 7 November from Rizzoli) and tells Nicola H Cosentino’s connection with music, competitiveness, the bittersweet backstories of Mediterraneo (Oscar in ’92) and I’m Not Scared.

Jelinek (Nobel Prize winner in 2004) talks about herself from Vienna, interviewed by Alessandra Iadicicco, talking about the new book Personal Data (in bookstores from 31 October, La nave di Teseo), which is not an autobiography but reveals events that have been previously confidential, such as the persecution of the family during Nazism. The Nobel Prize winner also comments bitterly on the tax investigation (which ended in nothing after 6 years) which cost her the seizure of her files and notes.

The issue ends with the 12-page special dedicated to Lucca Comics & Games, which returns from November 1st to 5th. Many of the great guests of the fair can be found on «la Lettura». Among the protagonists: Frank Miller, cult author, talks to Emilio Cozzi; the Hanuka twins, Asaf and Tomer, tell their story to Alessia Rastelli; Dario Bressanini talks about his Doctor Newtron (Feltrinelli Comics) to Danilo Zagaria.
