STORY – The Hamas assault on Nir Am was dazzling. The kibbutzniks defended themselves, while security forces arrived. No kibbutz members were killed, except the Israeli soldiers sent to the rescue.

On October 7, 2023, it was 6:25 a.m. when sirens rang out in the streets of Nir Am and pulled Avi Kadoch from his bed. Rocket attacks are frequent in this kibbutz located less than a kilometer from the border of the Gaza Strip, and therefore so are startled awakenings in the early morning. As usual, Avi locks himself in his “mamad”, the anti-rocket shelter provided for this purpose, with his wife. “There are a lot of them, right?» remarked his wife. In the sky, explosions thunder and warning sirens continue to sound. The phone vibrates. On WhatsApp, the messages are alarming, an attack is reportedly underway in a neighboring kibbutz, Kfar Aza.
