On St. Stephen’s Day, we primarily celebrate the thousand-year stability and creative man created by our founding king, the Minister of Justice stated when he presented state awards on Monday in Budapest on the occasion of August 20.
Because Szent István founded the continuous statehood of Hungary for more than a thousand yearsand created something from which we can draw strength and a pattern for our own lives, primarily the ability to remain – said Bence Tuzson.
On this day, those who deserve it are awarded because the state expresses its appreciation for the creative person, he added.
The minister believed that it is worthwhile to think about what kind of King Saint István we celebrate on August 20. Some saw him as a strong leader, some as a holy king and some as a warlord. A strong, holy leader was also needed at that time, because at that time it had not yet been decided whether Hungary could start on the path of Christian countries, and it had not been decided whether St. István could keep the country under control.
When we remember the founding of the state, he continued, we first of all remember that Saint István was a creative king, and we, the descendants, inherited from him the ability to remain.
In this regard, he drew attention to the fact that in the European Union, along with Hungary, only France can claim to have been a continuous state for more than a thousand years.
Therefore, it is no coincidence that, in contrast to other countries that celebrate great changes or revolutions on their national holidays, we Hungarians do not celebrate great changes with the founding of the state, but permanence, Hungary’s survival, he added.
Finally, he thanked the awardees for making a lasting impact in their respective fields for the benefit of the nation and the country. With their creations and actions, they add up and draw the mosaic that represents Hungary.
On the occasion of August 20, Bence Tuzson presented the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit, the Knight’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit and the Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit at the ceremony.
