Retired Turkish Ambassador “Uluç Ozulker” who worked in Libya during the seventies revealed Libya’s role during the Turkish military peace operation in Cyprus 50 years ago

This came in his statement to Anadolu Agency, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the operation, where the ambassador spoke about Gaddafi’s position during the “peace operation” phase that Turkey implemented on July 20, 1974, noting that he provided strong support to Turkey, and described Libya as one of the first countries to support the operation.

Ozulker stressed that relations at that time between Turkey and Libya were friendly and positive, explaining that Libya opened its weapons stores to the Turkish forces, and allowed them to take what they needed, noting that Gaddafi told them, “Our airspace and our warehouses are open, come and take what you need.”

On July 20, 1974, Turkey launched a “peace operation” in Cyprus after a military coup supported by the ruling military junta in Greece, which targeted the island’s Turkish population.

In February 1975, the “Turkish Federal State of Cyprus” was established in the northern part of the island, which became known as the Turkish Republic of Cyprus.
