On the anniversary of the assassination of its late leader, Mohamed Brahmi, the Popular Current Party announced today (Thursday) its support for Tunisian President Kais Saied’s candidacy for a second term in the presidential elections, which will be held on October 6, according to what was reported by the German News Agency.

On this day in 2013, which coincides with Republic Day, MP Mohamed Brahmi was assassinated by gunfire in front of his residence by extremists, months after the assassination of politician and lawyer Chokri Belaid.

The Popular Current holds the Islamist Ennahda Movement, which was leading the government at the time, politically responsible for the assassination of its leader, and whose leaders, including the movement’s leader Rached Ghannouchi, are currently in prison. The party said in its statement today that it supports “the national liberation project, correcting mistakes, and avoiding weaknesses, as the historic opportunity still exists and continues with the current president, and we see no reason to stifle it or risk aborting it or intersect with those who want to bring him down.” President Saied, who came to power in 2019, overthrew parliament in 2021, dissolved the political system, and abolished the 2014 constitution under the pretext of combating corruption and chaos in state institutions.

President Saied said when announcing his candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections that he wanted to continue the “battle for national liberation.” But opposition parties continue to accuse him of strengthening one-man rule, undermining the foundations of democracy, and restricting freedoms.
