The head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, indicated that “on the first anniversary of the victims of the floods that swept through our city of Derna and neighboring cities, we renew our grief for those we lost, and we remember the moments of pain and steadfastness,” saying: “May God have mercy on those pure souls, and we pray With patience To all our people.

In turn, the Ministry of Interior, in charge of the Government of National Unity, issued a statement on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Derna flood disaster.

The ministry said in a statement: “Today marks the first anniversary of the Derna flood disaster, which shook the country and left a deep wound in the hearts of Libyans.”

She added: “On this day last year, September 11, the city of Derna witnessed one of the worst natural disasters in its history, as floods swept through the city, causing the loss of many lives and catastrophic destruction of infrastructure.”

And he continued Statement“This tragedy was not just a passing event, but a tragedy that broke all of our hearts for what our people and brothers in the city suffered. The grief we experienced during those difficult days will never be erased from memory, and will remain a witness to the patience and strength of the Libyan people.”

The statement said: “Despite the tragedy, Derna has proven to be a symbol of steadfastness and unity in Libya. The disaster has shown the strength of the solidarity of the Libyan people who rushed to the aid of their brothers in Derna from every direction. The humanitarian response was amazing, and proved that Libya is still united by deep fraternal ties despite all the challenges.”

The statement added: “On this painful anniversary, we pray for the souls of the martyrs we lost in that disaster, and we offer our sincere condolences and sympathy to their families and relatives. We share their grief and hope that Derna will be stronger today, and that it will regain its health to always remain a symbol of steadfastness and will. May God have mercy on the martyrs of Derna and we ask God to protect Libya and its people from all harm.”

Yesterday, flags were flown at half-mast in Tripoli, Misurata and several other cities in mourning for the victims of the floods that swept Derna and areas of eastern Libya as a result of Hurricane Daniel.
