As the examination of the immigration text begins in the National Assembly, after having found its political path in the Senate, it seems useful to us to bring a voice that is ultimately very absent from the debate: that of the field. “News from the front”, in a way! In an issue as sensitive as immigration, this requirement is increased tenfold. Briançon in the Hautes-Alpes, Menton in the Alpes-Maritimes, and more generally the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region are on the front line facing current waves of irregular immigration.
And we, local elected officials, are on the front line facing our citizens who are seeing this phenomenon grow, which they have never been confronted with on such a scale. These are also extremely touristy areas, as everyone knows, where the question of shortage of professions particularly arises.

What we want to say today to those who are preparing to discuss this legislation is that we need it. We need this administrative clarification, republican firmness and absolute lucidity. We, in our territories, have our eyes wide open. We see these helpless migrants passing by, manipulated by smugglers and dream sellers.

At more than 2,000 meters above sea level, in Briançon, they are unfortunately sellers of death, the territory having again experienced three accidental deaths since August. We see the number of unaccompanied minors explode, we see the distress of some, we see the delinquency of others, and we are mobilizing all our resources to deal with it.

With the help of the State, each in our local areas of responsibility, we are coping, but the current systems are not enough: they are neither sufficient to face the waves of immigration in the right conditions, nor to take care of those who arrive on the national territory – in all directions of care, from reception to expulsion, depending on the situation. A need for help in the face of flows that are increasingly difficult to control
Yes, we need the State to set the number of foreigners admitted to settle in France. Yes, we need an annual debate on immigration policy, which brings together local elected officials to highlight what is happening on the ground. Yes, we need firmness and toughening up of the conditions for family reunification, the acquisition of nationality and the issuance of residence permits.
