On the side, the back or even the stomach: what is the optimal sleeping position for you?

When we feel tired and long to sleep, few of us deal with the position in which we choose to do so – on the left side, right side or even on the back. But is there a correct sleeping position?

End of insomnia: the secret food that will help you sleep better at night

Most people prefer to sleep on their side, while those who choose to sleep on their backs tend to sleep worse or have difficulty breathing, Science Alert claims. In most cases, we tend to move around a lot during the night. A study that examined 664 people found that participants spent about 54% of their time in bed sleeping on their side, about 37% on their backs, and about 7% on their stomachs.

The study also shows that men, mainly under the age of 35, tended to feel restlessness, and made more changes in the sleeping position, the movements of the hands, hips and upper back during the night. However, William Dement, a senior sleep researcher at Stanford University, argues that allowing the body to move during the night is generally a good idea. According to him, while we sleep the body monitors any pain or discomfort and adapts accordingly

There is no perfect situation

The research also shows that there are no unequivocal results on the “optimal sleeping position” – since age, weight, environment and activities play a role in finding the best movement for our body.
