No Venezuelan holiday is complete without tequeños. Whether it is a wedding or a baptism, cheese-filled tequeños cannot be missing from any table, so it is logical that Rawayana arrived at “El Tiny” with a box to share.

Kicking off with hits from the band’s 2016 album, Trippy Caribbean, the Caracas-formed group brought their infectious energy and beach sound to the NPR office. The reggae-groove that defined the first songs soon became something more expansive, giving a Caracas twist to funk, merengue, rock and hip-hop. Rawayana’s performance, which included two singles from the upcoming album, Who’s Bringing the Bugles? – perfectly illustrated how the group’s sound extends and plays with the musical movements of the Caribbean diaspora to create something totally new.

For more than a decade, Rawayana has been at the forefront of a young generation of Venezuelan artists who grew up under the country’s socioeconomic crisis. In his performance at the Tiny Desk, he showed how much talent has come out of Venezuela during that time, bringing in friends and collaborators like Apache, Irepelusa, Orestes Gómez, Joel Martínez
