Oncologist Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Sexual Abuse
Oncologist Manuel Alvarez, who was sentenced to seven years in prison for repeated sexual abuse of his patients, turned himself in to the police on Friday.
The professional, who was convicted of sexually abusing women patients, is currently in police custody at the Third Police Station in Porvenir, Magallanes Region.
Despite being sentenced on July 15th, an arrest warrant was issued on August 6th, but the authorities were unable to locate him.
A search of Alvarez’s homes in Santiago and Punta Arenas was unsuccessful. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued, and he is now being sought by detectives from the Sexual Crimes and Minors Brigade (Brisexme) of the PDI in both Santiago and Punta Arenas.
The court found Alvarez guilty of exploiting the vulnerability of his victims, who were cancer patients under his care.
The attacks occurred in 2016 and 2017 at a private medical facility, against two individuals in the final stages of their illness.
Lawyer Denies Fugitivity
Cesar Ramos, the lawyer representing Alvarez, denied that his client is a fugitive. He stated that the doctor is simply awaiting the results of a feasibility report before reporting to the Magallanes prison.
“My client is not on the run,” Ramos said, as reported by Cooperative.
