The shipping company ONE will carry out a pilot project in collaboration with the Dutch company Econowind to test wind propulsion on one of its container ships, the ‘MV Kalamazoo’.

The feeder vessel, which operates between Pusan, Yokohama and Honolulu with a capacity of 1,036 TEUs, will be equipped with two sails called VentoFoils. These devices, successfully tested in the factory, will be installed next January and will be evaluated in real transport conditions for six months.

The trial will collect data on fuel consumption, emissions reduction and operational efficiency. The results will guide the assessment of the long-term viability of wind propulsion as a sustainable shipping solution.

VentoFoils, similar to airplane wings, harness wind energy, reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Each device has an intelligent suction system that optimizes air flow, generating up to 400 kW of power and reducing fuel consumption by 5%.

These sails are completely automatic, adjusting to the speed and direction of the wind and controllable from the bridge. With this initiative, ONE moves towards its net zero emissions goals by 2050, reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
