One dead and another missing after torrential rains in Central Turkey

Torrential rains fell in a number of districts of Central Turkey, including Kayseri, Kersehir, Cappadocia, claiming lives and causing great material damage.

Rivers overflowed, bridges collapsed, houses, workplaces, fields, stables were flooded, many people experienced great anxiety, informs the Ihlyas news agency.

In the central village of Uzunali, Kayseri district, heavy rains caused the river that flows through the village to overflow its bed and cause landslides. One person was dragged by the waters of the incoming river. The people who came to help managed to pull him out of the river, but he died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

In the village of Bunyan, the same district, dozens of houses, stables with domestic animals and fields were flooded, many people could not go outside due to the landslides.

One person is missing and is being sought by rescue teams. Cars and farm machinery were damaged.

The governor of Kayseri Gokmen Çiçek said that rescue teams of the government’s Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate /AFAD/, fire service, ambulance are participating in the rescue operations. People whose houses are at risk have been evacuated to safety.

Among the most affected counties is the region of Cappadocia, famous for its natural attractions and flying balloons.

In the central city of Nevsehir, which is visited by thousands of tourists for its bizarre rock formations and caves, landslides caused large chunks of rock to collapse, damaging dozens of cars.

The rescue teams rescued a grandfather and grandson who were in the same car, writes BTA.

The rainfall also affected the city of Kahramanmarash, where literally rivers flowed in the streets, people could not leave their homes. And those who were out in cars were stuck in their cars for several hours.

The Central Meteorological Service has warned of caution in the districts of Central Turkey, where further torrential rains are expected.
