The roof of a multi-storey car park collapses less than a mile from Wall Street. All the apartments and shops in the area have been evacuated
One person was killed and five were injured in the collapse of a multi-storey car park in the heart of Manhattan, less than a kilometer from the Wall Street Stock Exchange. Residents of nearby buildings were evacuated for fear of further collapses. Scary videos and images ended up on social networks: a woman shouted “go away!” and the ceiling started collapsing, dragging parked cars along with it.
The wounded were taken to the hospital. The toll, Manhattan firefighters said, could worsen in the next few hours. All apartments and businesses around the garage have been evacuated. Images taken from above show dozens of wrecked cars, some upside down or leaning on their sides, and large craters in the concrete, as if the area had been hit by a massive earthquake. In search of survivors, “robot dogs”, called Digidogs, were used precisely because the structure is at risk.

“The building,” said the mayor of New York, Eric Adams — is completely unstable.’ Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell spoke of “structural collapse”. The building is owned by Abacus Bankthe institution indicted in the past for financial fraud.
