The government has decided to import 30,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer from the United Arab Emirates and 40,000 metric tons of DAP fertilizer from Saudi Arabia through a state contract. At the same time, 30 thousand metric tons of urea fertilizer will be purchased from the domestic company Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (Kafco) Bangladesh. 498 crore 7 lakh 91 thousand 800 taka will be spent to buy fertilizer.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement has approved the purchase of fertilizers.

This approval was given in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement held on Wednesday (July 31) at the Secretariat under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali. This information is known from the source of the meeting.

According to sources, a proposal to import 10,000 metric tons of phosphoric acid was presented by the Ministry of Industry in the meeting. The cabinet committee discussed and approved the import of this phosphoric acid for 66.69 million rupees. The price of phosphoric acid per metric ton is estimated at 570 market tons.

When international tenders were called for the import of 10 thousand metric tons of phosphoric acid in the fiscal year 2024-2025, 2 tenders were submitted. Both the tender proposals were technically accepted. At the end of the tender process, M/s Best Eastern, Dhaka, the lowest bidder recommended by TEC, will supply this 10,000 metric tons of phosphoric acid.

Meanwhile, a proposal to import 40,000 metric tons of DAP fertilizer from Ma’aden in Saudi Arabia was presented at the meeting. This proposal has also been approved by the Cabinet Committee. Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation will import this fertilizer under the state level agreement. The total cost will be 259 crore 60 lakh taka. The price of DAP fertilizer per metric ton has been fixed at USD 550.

In the meeting, two proposals related to the purchase of fertilizers were presented by the Ministry of Industry. Both the proposals were approved by the Cabinet Committee. One of these is the import of 30,000 metric tons of bulk granular urea from Fertiglob Distribution Limited of the United Arab Emirates through a government contract. The total cost of importing this fertilizer will be 121 crore 48 lakh 21 thousand 800 taka. The price per metric ton has been fixed at 343.17 USD.

In view of another proposal of the Ministry of Industry, approval has been given to import 30 thousand metric tons of bagged granular urea fertilizer from Kafco. The total cost will be 116 crore 99 lakh 70 thousand taka. The price per metric ton is fixed at US$ 330.50.
