One in ten Dutch people does not go to the dentist

by time news

One in ten Dutch people has not been to the dentist for two years or more. This is apparent from a survey by the Patient Federation among 9,000 participants. Since 2006, oral care for adults is no longer covered by the basic insurance. That is one of the reasons that the Dutch postpone their visit to the dentist or even stop going at all. With all its consequences.

Fear of the dentist

Not only the costs are a reason for people not to go to the dentist: the fear of the dentist and corona are also frequently mentioned reasons. About 800,000 Dutch people are so afraid that they don’t dare to go at all (dental phobia). The cause of fear of the dentist and dental treatments can be many different causes. For example, a bad experience with the dentist or horror stories from friends or family.

Procrastination can lead to dental problems

Postponing a dental visit can cause annoying problems. The longer one waits with a visit to the dentist, the worse the teeth become. This means that more treatment is needed and that the costs of the visit can also be a lot higher. People often walk around with a hole in their teeth without realizing it. Without treatment, this can lead to inflamed teeth and/or molars. In some cases, the molar may even have to be replaced completely. Sometimes diseases in the mouth can also lead to diseases in the body. Various studies have shown that advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can lead to cardiovascular disease. There also appears to be a link between periodontitis and rheumatism, diabetes, premature birth and erection problems. In addition, bad teeth can also be bad for your self-confidence and social life.

Additional insurance

Adults are therefore not (any longer) insured for dental costs under the basic insurance. Exceptions to this are certain surgical procedures, such as the extraction of wisdom teeth. In addition, you are entitled to a partial reimbursement of dentures or prostheses. This concerns 75% of the costs, once every five years. The insured does not pay any deductible for this either. If people nevertheless want to be insured for the dentist and/or dental hygienist, they can take out additional insurance. It is best for consumers to compare health insurance policies to see which provider is the cheapest. You can switch once a year, in the months of November and December. At that time, the premiums for the following year are known.

Tip: brush with an electric toothbrush

Many dentists recommend brushing electrically rather than by hand. That is because it is better cleaned with it. The plaque is removed better and therefore the gums remain healthier. The correct brushing motion is programmed into the electric toothbrush. In addition, there is a timer on an electric toothbrush.
