France risks having one rider fewer than expected at the start of the road cycling race at the 2024 Paris Olympics after being overtaken by Great Britain in the latest ranking of nations from the International Cycling Union ( UCI). The five best-ranked nations will each be able to field four runners, the maximum quota for the Olympic race. However, since Tuesday October 3, France has only been in sixth place among men, behind Belgium, Denmark, Slovenia, Spain and Great Britain, which has just overtaken it. Instead of four, coach Thomas Voeckler therefore risks only being able to select three riders. A definite disadvantage while France has experienced excellent results in recent years with Julian Alaphilippe’s two world champion titles in 2020 and 2021 as well as Christophe Laporte’s world silver medal in 2022 and his title of champion of Europe in September. To get back into the top five, France must score the maximum number of UCI points during the last races on the program in 2023, including the Tour of Lombardy on Saturday and Paris-Tours on Sunday, since it is the end of season ranking that will be taken taken into account to determine quotas.
