Socrates said that the best context to think is within a dialogue with one or more people. Being that the one who carries out a monologue, it is more difficult for him to have dissonances that question his line of argument. In this case, Alberto Cortes constitutes conditions of possibility in which, although we, the spectators, are not expected to respond to his comments, reflections or occurrences, it is true that he himself realized the weight of the statements that they were sprouting from within.

It is interesting how repeating the same phrase with different tones of voice, intentions and even in another order from the original place of the speech at stake, favors what is emitted to gain more force. Almost as if by repeating something before an audience willing to listen to anything, it has helped Alberto Cortés to reformulate his memories and how to manage them (regardless of the fact that there are things that are and are not biographical, in this work). . But let’s not rush, here you don’t get to magic solutions by building a more baroque setting Out of the ordinary, then, his unhealed wounds, the misunderstandings in which he has been involved, his desires that have sometimes been unspeakable, etc…, continued to resound in each of his words.

One Night at the Golden Bar It flows like one of those conversations late at night waiting for the first bus home, after a long night of partying and dismay. However, from all that verbiage that seems to go nowhere, poetry is born, images and feelings come to light that were waiting for the ideal channel to be inhabited. Because limiting ourselves to pronouncing certain things with the sole purpose of rationalizing them sometimes disorients us when it comes to grasping their true meaning in our own lives.

Amidst all of this apparent “narrative mess”, his quirky sense of humor spiced up the fact that he talked about things that were inexplicable and others that were highly tragic. Yes, one of those that seems like there is no way out. So why not try alternative routes, since there is nothing else to lose? If it is that even the fear of rejection, that one’s expectations are not met…, they have come to be out of place. This is similar to wandering in a vacuum having lost interest in many things to which one would have given their entire lives in the not too distant past, but this does not imply that the character of Alberto Cortés ceases to be alive and lucid.

And all of the above is framed in themes queer, transporting any “everyday” thing to a plane in which a tension coexists between claiming, performatively, the right to be what one is and trying to live in a world of fantasy. But by no means frivolous and inconsistent. Well, queer people also deal with those who mix the fear of empathizing with the different, intellectual laziness and ignorance. And of course, the nervous laughter that came from the public was nothing more than a symptom of people who felt “cornered” before a being, which by itself is a catalyst that fosters a world in which to define a being. human does not necessarily mean highlighting affective sexual inclinations, gender identity, gender expression or the number of chromosomes someone was born with.

Of course, Alberto Cortés has displayed with One Night at the Golden Bar a recital full of sensitivity and vulnerability that moves. A work as beautiful as it is disturbing, which makes its audience approach the human condition from a place that leaves the conventional in brackets, and not because it discredits it, but because from that starting point he cannot express himself and be in the world. .
