Use multiple mobile phones with just one number and one contract? This is how it works, without having to have to apply for a separate number.

You’ve bought a new cell phone, but only your old phone fits into the hands-free system in your car. You don’t want your expensive smartphone to get damaged or lost by thieves while you’re on vacation or at a disco. These and similar scenarios require a solution that allows you to use multiple cell phones with the same number.

At the latest when the laborious task of swapping the SIM card fails because one cell phone needs a normal-sized SIM card and the other needs a smaller micro-SIM card, a more convenient solution is required. This solution is called Multi-SIM.

Most mobile phone providers offer so-called multi-SIM cards for a small additional monthly fee. Up to three mobile phones can then be operated under the same phone number and with the same contract.

If all devices are switched on, they all ring simultaneously when a call comes in. All devices can be used to make phone calls, send text messages or surf the Internet. This means that the owner does not have to switch off the phones that are not being used.

With Multi-SIM it is certainly possible, for example, to make calls on your cell phone, check emails on your smartphone and surf the Internet on your notebook at the same time using a UMTS mobile phone stick. However, especially with Internet-enabled smartphones and cell phones, it should be borne in mind that a possible limit on data volume is reached more quickly if, for example, two people surf the Internet at the same time using one device each.

The only restriction is that multiple calls cannot be made at the same time. If the user answers a call on one device or calls someone themselves, no conversation can be held on the other device at the same time.
