One wiper, three test boxes: new combi self-test detects corona, flu and RSV

by time news

The combi self-test has three test cells instead of one.

Only one eraser, but three test squares. With the new combi self-test from manufacturer Fluorecare, you not only test yourself for covid, but also for RSV and flu. Sounds good, but is it really that useful? “Clinically, it makes little difference whether you have the flu, RSV or corona.”

The new self-test works in exactly the same way as the corona tests that we are all familiar with by now. With a swab you first take a sample in your nose. Subsequently, you put the wiper in a test liquid, which you then drip into a test compartment. Only there are now three test boxes: one for covid, one for RSV and one for the flu.

Is that helpful? Virologist Marc Van Ranst is cautiously enthusiastic, but also nuances: “It certainly has added value over a test that only detects covid, but all in all the usefulness is limited. If you have symptoms and you really want to know what it is, such a test is useful. But you could also say: It must be one of three, so I’m just going to have a rest. The policy is the same for all three.”

That’s right, says Roel Van Giel, chairman of the general practitioners’ association Domus Medica. “Clinically, it makes little difference whether you have the flu, RSV or corona. There is no real treatment. You just have to get sick at home and possibly treat the symptoms with nasal spray and paracetamol. In addition, the general hygiene rules are important to prevent spread.”

Relieve GPs

Nevertheless, GPs also see an advantage in the new combination test. The option to make a kind of self-diagnosis may relieve the over-subscribed GPs a bit, says Van Giel. “Many people now know what to do with a viral image. Such a self-test may prevent some people from having to see a doctor. Although working people often need a certificate of incapacity for work, and then they still have to come by.”

“And even if you cannot get the disease under control and certain alarm symptoms arise such as shortness of breath or more and more fever, it is still a good idea to contact your doctor,” Van Giel adds.

With the celebrations in full swing and viral infections flying around, the danger of getting sick is lurking around every corner. So is it a good idea to take a combination test before you leave for the New Year’s party? “Only if you have symptoms,” says Van Ranst. “If you don’t have it, at this stage of the epidemic it is excessive to take a test. Nobody recommends that.”
