OnePlus 16 Hits 70,000 Preorders in One Hour Following China Launch

OnePlus launched its OnePlus 16 flagship smartphone in China, drawing 70,000 preorders within its first hour. The device features a 9,000 mAh battery, a 200-megapixel main camera, and a 165Hz display, though the manufacturer has no plans for an official European release.

Preorders and Launch Details for the OnePlus 16

The OnePlus 16 debuted on October 12, quickly generating massive consumer interest in Asian markets. Shipments and open sales are scheduled to begin on October 31, following the close of the initial preorder window.

Base pricing in China starts at 5,999 yuans, with a promotional launch price of 5,699 yuans, which converts to approximately 896 dollars or 690 euros at direct conversion, for the configuration equipped with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Additional configurations include a 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage variant priced at 6,799 yuans (roughly 1,016 dollars), and a 16 GB RAM with 512 GB storage model costing 7,499 yuans (about 1,120 dollars). Higher-tier variants scale up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, priced at 8,499 yuans or roughly 1,270 dollars (1,132 euros). These figures reflect a notable price increase compared to the previous generation model, the OnePlus 15, which launched in October 2025 at 3,999 yuans (533 euros).

Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Powers New Flagship

Under the hood, the flagship relies on Qualcomm’s advanced Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor built on a 2nm architecture, succeeding the 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 found in the predecessor. The hardware setup is paired with up to 16 GB of RAM and runs on ColorOS 17 based on Android 17. Powering the system is a massive 9,000 mAh battery utilizing silicon-carbon technology, representing a roughly 23 percent capacity increase over the 7,300 mAh battery of the OnePlus 15, supported by 100W wired charging via USB-C and 50W wireless charging.

Built explicitly with mobile gamers in mind, the device incorporates dedicated secondary silicon. A dedicated P4 display chip manages high frame rates, allowing the screen to sustain a 165Hz refresh rate for general tasks while pushing up to 185 frames per second in supported titles. Initial compatibility for the 185 FPS mode covers six games—specifically Peacekeeper Elite (the Chinese version of PUBG Mobile), Delta Force, Dark Zone, CrossFire: Mobile, Counter-Strike Online: Future, and Lost Light—with future updates slated to add support for Naruto and Hearthstone. An additional G3 optimization chip handles connection stability and latency reduction.

BOE X4 LTPO OLED Panel Improves Visuals

The visual centerpiece is a 6.78-inch BOE X4 LTPO OLED panel featuring a resolution of 1,272 x 2,772 pixels and a pixel density of 450 ppi. The display covers the full DCI-P3 color space, boasts a declared maximum brightness of 2,000 nits, and utilizes a luminescent material capable of dropping its brightness all the way down to a single nit for comfortable dark-room usage. Surrounding the hardware is a slim 1.15 mm bezel design, housing an ultrasonic fingerprint reader underneath the glass.

Imaging capabilities receive a substantial generational leap, swapping out previous multi-sensor layouts for a high-resolution Samsung ISOCELL HPE sensor measuring 1/1.4 inches at 200 megapixels for the primary wide camera, replacing the 50-megapixel wide camera found on the predecessor. That main shooter is accompanied by a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens providing 3x optical zoom. A matching 50-megapixel front-facing camera handles selfies, upgrading from the 32-megapixel front camera of the prior version.

Asian Market Exclusivity Limits Western Availability

Despite impressive hardware specifications, Western consumers face strict geographic barriers. Official distribution remains limited to Asian markets, with no plans for a release in Europe or the United States. In terms of color variations, the OnePlus 16 is offered in three distinct choices: Starlight, Dark Forest, and Martian Masterpiece. Buyers outside China must rely on third-party import platforms like Giztop, where retail prices include commercial markups and span specific configurations: the 12 GB RAM with 256 GB model in Black and Silver costs 999 dollars; the 12 GB RAM with 512 GB model in Black, Silver, and Orange costs 1,199 dollars; the 16 GB RAM with 512 GB model in the same three colors reaches 1,299 dollars; and the top-tier 16 GB RAM with 1 TB storage variant is priced at 1,499 dollars.

Opting for unauthorized import channels introduces significant practical complications, particularly regarding regional software differences and warranty service. Because official European support channels do not stock parts for the device, any hardware failures or repair needs would likely result in refunds rather than direct servicing.
