Online Gambling | Action is needed at the national level; No remedy is available by State Government Act

Chennai: Governor RN Ravi has said that online gambling will not be solved by the law passed by the state government and action is needed at the national level while sending back the bill to the Tamil Nadu government and also in the attached letter.

The High Court overturned the law passed by the Legislative Assembly during the last AIADMK regime, banning gambling including online rummy in Tamil Nadu. On October 1 last year, Governor RN Ravi approved the online gambling ban and online gaming regulation emergency bill brought by the later DMK government.

Subsequently, Oct. On the 19th, the Legislature passed a bill banning online gambling and sent it to the Governor. The Government of Tamil Nadu replied to the explanations sought by the Governor in this regard. While the bill was shelved for a few months, the governor returned the bill on the 8th. He mentioned that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly does not have the power to pass this bill.

Regarding this, Law Minister S. Raghupathi says, “The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has the authority to pass the law banning online gambling. We will pass the bill again in the next legislative session and send it to the governor. When sent for the second time, there is no chance of the governor rejecting it,” he said.

Meanwhile, when the Governor sent back the bill to the Tamil Nadu government, it is said that he has sent a letter along with it and in that letter he has given some suggestions to the Tamil Nadu government.

In the letter, the governor said, “Online gambling is a matter of concern. Some who lose money commit suicide. A state government alone cannot ban internet related things including online games. It falls within the jurisdiction of the Central Government. This requires action at the national level.

The state government alone will not solve the problem by bringing legislation. A state government can only regulate sports. It cannot be completely banned. If this law is passed in defiance of this, it will be contrary to the court order. Instead, the Tamil Nadu government may take steps to regulate online gambling.
