Only three of the EU’s 26 commissioner candidates passed the asset test, Olivér Várhelyi is one of them

by time news

Of the 26 commissioner candidates of the European Commission, only three managed to pass the asset test without difficulty, Oliver Várhely and belongs to the latter. The Legal Committee of the European Parliament (JURI) is outside the Hungarian language at the Thursday meeting Piotr Serafin Polish and Wopke Hoekstra in the case of a Dutch candidate, he clearly established that there was no conflict of interest. THE Politico he wrote this on the basis of an email distributed by the EP faction of the Greens, as well as the statements of three representatives who knew what happened at the meeting.

At the JURI meeting, where the asset declarations of the 26 candidate commissioners were discussed in alphabetical order by name, for three and a half hours, sharp contrasts between the EP’s representative groups quickly came to the fore.

According to one representative, several factions fought each other at the otherwise “confused” meeting.

Hoekstra was described by one of the leakers as an “example to be followed” in disclosing the information to be screened. However, at the press conference following the meeting, the spokesperson of the left faction of the Socialists and Democrats also noted that they think he should disclose what clients he worked for during his previous work as an employee of the McKinsey consulting firm.

As the first part of the vetting process for commissioner candidates, the members of the EP’s legal committee carry out a background check. They have the right to reject candidates if they see a conflict of interest in their case. The next step will be a hearing by the parliamentary committees responsible for the area, which will take place between November 4 and 12.

The JURI finally accepted with a simple majority that the 23 candidates of the Commission should be asked general questions. In this way, they can provide more information about their financial situation,

because many of the declaration forms were left blank.

According to the rules, commissioners fill out the statements themselves and can choose which parts to answer. On paper, the candidates must disclose all assets over 10,000 euros, and the representatives at the meeting “hardly found it credible” that only a few candidates indicated that they had such.

As we wrote, later on Péter Magyar and András Kulja will also be able to decide on the fate of Olivér Várhelyi, who is preparing to become health commissioner. As well as the fact that Várhelyi played a relatively important role in the previous European Commission, but now he was given one of the weakest posts, even more so because of the way we performed our task in the previous cycle.
